“We as journalists are duty bound to tell stories with our words and pictures in the hope that others will not forget and to remind the rest of us how lucky we really are”. - Essdras Suarez

Essdras, a Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist has been a Boston Globe photographer since 2002. As a Globe photographer, he says his job title includes “strict instructions to find a feature per shift so I'm always on the lookout for something out of the ordinary. This is what I called "listening to the light" where the light makes itself noticeable by its quality and then you start paying more close attention to what is going on. I try to always "listen" to the light around me.”

Nationally Essdras Suarez has covered stories such as the Columbine shooting and space shuttle Columbia disaster. Internationally he has photographed in Sudan, Egypt, Laos, Cambodia, Colombia, Cuba, Venezuela, Brazil, Russia, Panama, Haiti, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Spain, France, Israel, Iraq, Kuwait, and China.

May 6th Education night
The May 6th education night will feature Steve Pansy from Natural Color Lab.  Steve will be visiting to introduce a new Kodak paper that he says rivals Cibachromes of the past. Traditionally catering to the needs of discerning professional, Natural Color Labs would like to grow its business to include serious amateurs, like us.

Following Steve’s presentation, Paul Smith will present a number of Photoshop techniques for color correcting and retouching portraits. Many of the same techniques can be applied to other forms of photography. Bring your laptop and get some hands on practice!!  If time allows, Jim DeLuco and Paul will some demonstrate posing suggestions.

DOT Battery Restrictions Clarified

The Department of Transporation has revized the travel restrictions on batteries to make the rules more clear.  Basically, you still may not place spare batteries in checked baggage.  The clarification is related to carry-on baggage.

For personal use, there is generally no restriction on the number of spare batteries allowed in carry-on baggage. That includes cell phone batteries, “hearing aid” button cells, and AA/AAA batteries available in retail stores, as well as almost all standard laptop computer batteries.

The only restriction for carry-on baggage is related to extended life batteries that are not too common.

This is good news for for camera and laptop users!

See the DOT's safe travel site for details.

Greater Lynn International Salon

By Paul Smith, Club Coordinator

Ice_Climber_by_Mike_Goodman.jpg It’s time to get ready for the 32nd annual Greater Lynn Salon.  In addition to Slide competition, there will also be a Digital competition again this year.  The 32nd Annual Greater Lynn Int’l Salon is coming up in February.  Deadline for entries is February 8th  2007.  Three years ago, Gateway Camera Club took first place among club entries.  Last year we finished 9th out of 22 clubs that entered.  We had 18 participants last year.  There is a “prize” for the club with the most entrants.  I’d love to win that prize this year.
